Clip In. Rock Out.

Making the switch from your gym sneakers to clip in cycling shoes may be a tough decision in the beginning, but it will be one you will never regret. Many people who rent our shoes to try out agree that they immediately feel a difference, and go rushing out to buy a pair of their own.

According to livestrong.com, clip-in cycling shoes have the following advantages:

·       prevent slipping off the pedals and helps apply even force and control in every stroke (be one with the bike)

·       allow push and pull with each pedal stroke, working full range of leg muscles (for that beach bod!)

·       prevent fatigue, injury, and incorrect form (so you can give your all with each climb, sprint, and jump)

·       a rigid sole prevents foot strain (save those feet for long walks on the beach)

Breakaway Cycle has cycling shoes at the studio available to rent for $5, and if you are ready buy a pair, California Bicycle on La Jolla Blvd. gives Breakaway riders 15% off!

Intervals!

Many of our clients are constantly in training for their next big event- whether it's a triathlon, marathon, or a 5K. One of the best ways for athletes to build up their fitness level is through interval training. Interval training combines short, high intensity bursts of speed with slower, recovery phases throughout a single workout.

How does it work?

Interval training works both the aerobic and anaerobic system. During the high intensity efforts, the anaerobic system uses the energy stored in the muscles (glycogen) for short bursts of activity. Anaerobic metabolism works without oxygen, but the by-product is lactic acid. As lactic acid builds, the athlete enters oxygen debt, and it is during the recovery phase that the heart and lungs work together to "pay back" this oxygen debt and break down the lactic acid. It is in this phase that the aerobic system is using oxygen to convert stored carbohydrates into energy.

Intervals are most effective when they are:

  • limited to twice a week during the training season
  • when the interval sessions are separated by at least 48 hours to allow adequate recovery.

Breakaway Cycle offers Interval classes Monday and Wednesday mornings at 6:30AM, as well as a “long-ride” on Sunday’s with our 90-minute Endure Class! Come check us out and let us help you prepare for your next big race!
